BI Software to Minimize Risks for Telecom Companies

Business Intelligence (BI) will help telecommunications companies to minimize the risks involved in providing Third generation (3G) services to their customers, according to a statement issued by Wong Mei Khuen, Practice Head (Telecommunications) of the Malaysia-based intelligence service provider SAS. Telecommunications companies are losing between 12 and 15 per cent of their revenues due to the complexities involved in the technical issues in providing 3G services to customers. This puts a strain on the company's resources, the statement said.

Telecom industry expert Rob Mattison said that many companies were struggling to ensure proper billing and collection of payment for the 3G services offered. 3G services involve third parties like content providers, and so, use a business model that is completely different from that used by conventional voice services.

This means that telecom companies need to have clear-cut definitions of the roles that they and the content providers have to play in delivering the services to the end-users of the network. They also have to delineate methods for tracking, reporting and billing the volume and nature of the services provided, and assign responsibility for collection and credit risks.

An added challenge for the telecom companies is the billing policy. There are usually different calculations used for text messages ands email messages __ text messages are usually billed according to the time of day or week, while email messages are billed according to their size.

Deploying business intelligence software, says Wong, can considerably reduce the complications involved in such calculations. BI tools can create a transparency in the way charges are calculated, transformation information is captured and delivered to the billing system, and how the processing is done by the billing system.

BI software will definitely decrease the risks and vulnerabilities that telecommunications companies are open to, and will make the job of revenue assurance much simpler, adds Wong.
